南湖柳葉菜特產於本島中北部中至高海拔之岩屑地，由於分布地點少，再加上花朵美麗搶眼，易受到採集的威脅，因此經文化資產保存法公告為珍貴稀有植物（目前受本法保護的植物僅有五種）。南湖柳葉菜為柳葉菜科多年生草本植物，每年六、七月間，在南湖大山、奇萊主山等地綻放，粉紅色至淡紫紅色的花朵，每每吸引了登山者的目光，為之驚豔！ Epilobium is a genus of some 170 species widely distributed in cool temperate and montane regions worldwide. Four of the seven Taiwanese taxa are endemic. Epibbium nankotaizanense was published by Yoshimatsu Yamamoto in 1926. It is one of the most distinctive species of the genus in East Asia by virtue of its very large flowers, globular and shallowly4.lobed stigma, persistent coma, and its habitat as a clumped alpine scree plant above 3,400 m altitude in Taiwan. It has no obvious close relatives in East Asia, but there are striking morphological similarities through convergent evolution between this species and E. obcordatum that also occurs on scree of the western United State.
